The first major discoveries that laid the foundation for technological advances in the world of vaccinations were that of Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur. In 1796, Jenner took on smallpox. He had been informed that milkmaids seemed to be immune to the disease, however, upon further inspection he realized that the women all had a lesser form of smallpox, called cowpox, on their hands. He began to theorize that cowpox played a role as to why the women never contracted the deadly disease. To test his theory, he rubbed pus from a cowpox wound into a laceration of a young boy and then exposed him to smallpox. Weeks later, the boy still hadn’t contracted the more lethal disease, smallpox. He called this a vaccine, however, he had no idea as to why this was or what the connection was between the two diseases. As such, people of this age were skeptical to test the new vaccine. In 1885, Louis Pasteur decided to take on rabies. Well aware of Jenner’s studies, he began to create a vaccine from the spinal cords of infected rabbits. The method was first tested on a young boy who was bitten by an infected dog. Unknown if the vaccine was effective, the boy survived and there was now scientific evidence to back both theories. However, Pasteur, like Jenner had no idea as to why these methods worked. Book Analysis â€Å"This court begins at nine o clock. Why are you late?† (p.1) The setting of the book is immediately set within the first page. Mr. Adeyemi is late again, the court room is packed full of anyone who could get off work and Obi has tears in his eyes. The author of this book goes on to explain the horrible treasons this young man has committed. Taking a bride. The worst and most corrupt thing anyone involved with the civil service could do, even though EVERYONE involved is doing the same thing. Some are just caught more than others. The author hints periodically throughout the book with questions testing your morality: what would you do for someone you love? Even when they’re gone, how would you conduct yourself? I agree with the authors lessons and point of view. The author is portraying Obi as a normal young man until he receives the scholarship to get a western education. This education changes him and shows him that he is caught between his old European ideas and new western modernization idea. The Europeans have always been very against change and have always done their best to keep things nice and stable. Push the Pause Button. The book does a great job expressing the hatred toward change of the 19th century Europeans and the fast-paced modernization of the west. I was just one of the vast millions traveling somewhere, when I suddenly had the urge just to stop, and see where I was. I realized that I was in a deserted city, with the only other person that had stopped trudging like the endless others, and it was her. She looked perfect, the example of beauty, there like a pillar of reason in an endless sea of confusion, unexpected, yet she had kind of aura around her that made you feel that she held everything together and that if she wasnt there, there would be nothing. Yet, for all of her beauty and wisdom, she was unhappy. She knew something that should not be known by anyone or anything, something so terrible it went beyond words. She knew when the end would come, not only for herself but for everyone around her. She had confronted death once and bested it, only to become death itself. There was something else, much worse than knowing the deaths of all people, that she cold feel, but not know. It is like the primal fear inherent in all things that could be considered aware. That pure and unaltered fear that only can develop with the fear of millennia, that grows, matures, and the unadulterated fear that all beings will eventually try to forget. It is hidden from their knowledge that fear is undying, no matter how deep you bury it, it will always be there, pulsing and waiting. She knew this fear, but couldnt force herself to look ahead and see what it was. Her instincts, her primal fear told her that to know this would destroy her, dismantle the very fiber of her being. This she knew, but she also understood the importance of deception. What would happen if deaths prey saw that death itself was scared? How can fear itself, the same primal urge that drove us on for millennia, be in mortal terror?
